Bosnia & Herzegovina

Bosnia & Herzegovina is one of those places you don’t hear enough about, but it’s got so much to offer. They may not have beaches but they have mountains and lakes filled with crazy waterfalls. Around 40 percent of Bosnia is covered in forest, consisting of oak, pine, and beech trees.

Bosnia’s been through a lot. The Bosnian War (1992-1995) hit hard, and the country’s still feeling the effects. It’s one of the poorest in Europe, and the war displaced about two million people. July 11th is Srebrenica Memorial Day, honoring the 8,000+ Bosniak Muslim men and boys killed in the massacre. The recovery’s been slow and challenging, with high unemployment, corruption, and political instability throughout the country. They’ve got a long way to go before they catch up with the rest of Europe.

That being said, there’s so much more to Bosnia than just the war. The people are super friendly, prices are affordable, and the landscapes are seriously dreamy. It’s like a hidden gem for travelers seeking something unique and magical.

On a personal note, Bosnia’s got a special place in my heart. My parents grew up there! My mum spent 16 years in Bosanski Brod, and my dad spent 17 years around Bosnia before they both made the move to Australia. It’s where they met, and I feel that connection every time I think about it.

Step into a magical and traditional way of life

Mostar: It’s appropriate to start with the most obvious landmark Stari Most, also know as the Old Bridge. It’s a strong iconic symbol of its history. The city is seriously a magical and charming place with a mix of Ottoman and Mediterranean architecture. You can explore the city's many bazaars, coffeehouses, and traditional restaurants. Wear comfortable walking shoes because the whole town is pebble stone and very slippery. If you're Australian, you might be familiar with "Hamish & Andy's Gap Year,” when they did a comedic skit jumping off the bridge.

Bihać: It's a close-knit small community, cute but lacks excitement in the town. However, the nature here is beyond breathtaking. The Una National Park, home to the Una River and its waterfalls is one of the country’s leading natural attractions. Best things to do here are whitewater rafting, kayaking and the adrenaline quad drive. Also highly recommend Mlin Restaurant for coffee or lunch with a dreamy view on the river.

Mlinčići Jajce: A tranquil spot surrounded by nature, several unique wooden mills, elderly ladies live painting and water cascasing around. The village is known for its traditional way of life. The name "Mlinčići" comes from the word "mlin," which means "mill" in Bosnian. Definitely check out the Jajce Fortress and the Pliva Lakes if you're in the area.

Sarajevo: Is the capital city of Bosnia. It's a vibrant city with a rich history. You can explore the Old Town wandering the traditional cafes and cobblestone streets. Visit the the Latin Bridge where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated. If you're curious about the city's religious heritage, you should visit the Gazi Husrev-Beg Mosque. It's one of the most important Islamic architectural landmarks in the Balkans.

Pocitelj: Is a historic village known for its well-preserved medieval architecture. I definitely recommend doing the climb to the fortress. It is fairly steep, but doable. And well worth it. There are a couple of little markets at the top and bottom of the fortress selling fruit, cold rose lemonade drinks, and souvenirs. The view of the mosque and hillside is impressive and incredibly picturesque.

Kravica Waterfall: A large tufa cascade on the Trebižat River, it's a stunning little spot. You can swim right up to the falls which sounds dreamy until you actually step in. Shockingly freezing but you push through, sort of. Was feeling good and then boom I look down and see a water snake casually swimming beneath me. Harmless? Probably. Unsettling? Absolutely. Aside from that little surprise the place is a dream. Picnic spots, restaurants, a couple of bars. So worth it.

Blagaj: Blagaj feels like something out of a fairytale. It's known for its stunning natural scenery, including the Blagaj Tekke, a dervish monastery located next to a powerful spring. Go in the early morning for the magic of the place. There is a small fee to enter the famous house (around 10 MARK, $8 AUD). The building was constructed in the 18th century and served as a place of worship and meditation. When you visit, women have to wear a headscarf so I threw on a pink one, felt pretty cute.

During my time in Bosnia I visited the Bosnian Pyramids. Wait, what? The Bosnian Pyramids of the Sun is a controversial archaeological site located in the town of Visoko, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The site was discovered in 2005 by a Bosnian-American businessman named Semir Osmanagić, who claimed that the hills surrounding Visoko were actually the remains of ancient pyramids, built by an unknown civilization over 10,000 years ago. The largest and most famous of these pyramids is the Pyramid of the Sun, which Osmanagić claims is the largest pyramid in the world, even larger than the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. According to Osmanagić, the pyramid was built using advanced technology and was used as a source of energy and a place of spiritual significance.

It’s one of those places you can’t forget. I had the weirdest experience here. There was this meditation festival happening, so I decided to join in. I did a meditation in the “magic forest” with 10 other women, and one of the exercises was to take turns staring into each other's eyes for 1 minute each. I get the idea behind it, but it was way too intense for me. I left the experience feeling so much worse than when I entered. I also ventured deep inside the Bosnian pyramid tunnels. It’s super fresh down there, and apparently they have some healing properties. Not sure about that, but definitely a memorable experience.
