Greece

We did a week sail in Lefkada and I’d definitely recommend. Everything was planned for us, super relaxed, and the scenery was beautiful. It’s a bit off the beaten path so it might feel quiet if you’re looking for crowds. September was a perfect time to go, fewer tourists and flights were way cheaper ($100 vs $600 in June/July). The sail started on 3rd September. On our boat we had two English couples who proposed right as we left the dock. They bailed on day 3, drama. We also had two American girls, Cara and Amy. Nice enough. We hopped between islands, met some awesome South Africans and ended up having a seafood BBQ on a DIY grill over the rocks. Our host Tara and skipper Dimos were amazing. We linked up with other boats, played paddleboard games, and even saw dolphins. It cost us $2,500 AUD each for the week. Expensive, but it’s a luxury boat and the experiences made it worth it.

Spartochori – Our first dinner spot.

Aetolia-Acarnania – Secluded beach spot where we had our beach BBQ.
Fiskardo – Beautiful, quiet village, ate gyros and tanned on a pebble beach.
Kefalonia Port – Where we parked the boats and got to meet other crews.
Sami – Goat beach.
Vathy Harbour – Best spaghetti bolognese with a chilled coke. Had drinks with other crew.

Best paddleboard spots:

Gedaki Beach

Atokos

Katomeri

After the sail, we headed to Athens and stayed at Hawks Hostel. The area wasn’t the nicest but the hostel itself was gold. Met so many people, had crazy nights at the rooftop bar with Acropolis views, and played beer pong with friends. First night lost my phone (found it later on the stairs), but also ran into a friend I use to work with. What are the chances. Greek cuisine hits hard. Fresh, simple, good. My food highlight in Athens was actually Italian at a place called Lady n’ Tramp (best pasta I’ve ever had). The street market food on that street is all amazing. The last night was the best night, we played games, met people, and sang down the hostel stairs. Athens is full of energy.
