Montenegro

“You’re Montenegrin?” That’s the reaction I usually get when I mention it. Fair enough, this country doesn’t usually get much of a name drop. But this little Balkan country is honestly one of the most amazing places I’ve been. The locals call it Crna Gora which means “Black Mountain,” and yeah the name fits. I’ve been a couple of times now because my dad’s side of the family is from here. It feels pretty cool coming here and feeling a bit like a local.

Porto Montenegro: I’ve never been to Monte Carlo but Porto Montenegro gives me the same kind of vibes. Owned by Dubai this place has a certain feel to it. There’s also a noticeable mafia presence in the area which adds to the glamour, one of the reasons my dad didn’t want to move here. Still, it’s easily one of my top spots in Europe. This place is dripping in luxury. The marina looks like something straight out of a film with elegant yachts and high-end restaurants. It’s not really budget friendly but the experience is 100% worth it. You’ll feel like a baller walking around the marina. Dress up, wear white, and keep it effortlessly stylish. Get yourself an elderflower spritz, it’s so good.

Blue Caves: The Blue Cave, also known as the Blue Grotto is an amazing sea cave that is one of the most popular attractions on the coast near Kotor, famous for its blue glow. You can hop on a boat tour from nearby towns like Kotor, Tivat, or Herceg Novi. The boat ride alone is worth it, you'll get some beautiful views of the coastline before you even reach the cave. Add it to your bucket list!

Old town Kotor: If you're into medieval charm, Kotor should be on your radar. It’s one of the best-preserved medieval towns in the world and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. Kotor is by far the most famous town in the region and it’s also known as the city of cats, so be prepared to spot plenty of cute cats roaming around.

The Bay of Kotor: The Bay of Kotor is stunning. It's surrounded by beautiful mountain ranges and has charming little towns and villages along the coast. If you’re planning a trip I’d highly recommend doing it by car so you can stop and enjoy the views. The coastal road is incredible, and you’ll want to take your time. For an amazing view of the entire bay definitely hike up to St John Fortress. While you’re exploring check out Perast, it's known for its beautiful baroque buildings and historic churches. And then there’s Herceg Novi, with its rich culture and gorgeous beaches. The whole area is definitely worth seeing.

Budva: This modern coastal town is buzzing with life and is famous for its stunning beaches, fun nightlife, and endless tourist attractions. Its prime location is on the Budva Riviera, a popular spot for swimming, tanning, and water sports. Cocktails run about 8-9 euros, and if you’ve never had a Mai Tai now’s the time to try it.

Ostrog Monastery: Central Montenegro is one of the lesser visited parts of the country but this stunning monastery cut into a cliff is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the Balkans. If you're fascinated by religious history, don't skip this place.

Prokletije National Park: is located on the territories of both Montenegro and Albania. Here, you'll find over 40 peaks to hike, along with glacial lakes and waterfalls to explore. It's all nature here, just pure mountain beauty. Remember to pack your own supplies because there are no shops around. From the lovely town of Plav where my relatives reside, it's just a 47 minute drive to Prokletije. We took a leisurely day hike there, enjoying the peace and quiet. I remember hiking to the top of a mountain and then lying in a field of grass covered in flowers and mini strawberries, it felt so dreamy. We went to Skakavica Eye, meaning mountain eyes, which is the most beautiful crystal clear water you will see. It's too cold to swim, but you’ll definitely want to just stare at it for a while.

Durmitor National Park: If you're into hiking, climbing, skiing, or canoeing, Durmitor is the place. Its massive mountains and glacial lakes make it one of the most ruggedly beautiful spots in Europe. It’ll be hard but when you finally see the view, you’ll know it’s all worth it.

Lake Skadar and Pavlova Strana Viewpoint: Haven’t been yet, but these are definitely must-visit spots if you’re after some adventure. Lake Skadar is huge, one of Europe’s biggest lakes, and it sits right on the Montenegro-Albania border. The place is full of unique plants and wildlife. You can take a boat tour or hike to the viewpoint for the insane panoramic views.
