Spain
Siesta by day, fiesta by night – that’s the Spanish way of life. Their party scene is legendary. They have tapas bars that turn into dance floors, rooftop bars with amazing views, and beach clubs that keep going until the sun rises. The beaches are chill, the paellas are next-level, and the architecture is mind-blowing. Spain’s got iconic landmarks like the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, the Alhambra Palace in Granada, and the Prado Museum in Madrid. The culture is as vibrant as it gets, with events like the running of the bulls in Pamplona and La Tomatina in Buñol, where you literally throw tomatoes at each other.
Everyone needs to go to Barcelona at least once. No excuses. This place is the coolest, it’s loud, lively, and seriously awesome. An unforgettable experience, one of those trips that’s even better with a group of friends. I was in Barcelona with a big group of my mates for just over a week, and yeah, we partied like there was no tomorrow. There’s so much to do, if you’re only doing a short stay check out the spots I mentioned. Trust me, you can’t go wrong. And if you’re staying longer, lucky you. You’re in for a good time.

The Bunkers: This is one of the coolest hangout spots I've ever been to. We took a taxi to the entrance, bringing bottles of wine and snacks for a picnic. It's definitely the best viewpoint of Barcelona and it's free! It's mostly filled with younger people, and the vibes are awesome. I couldn't recommend this place enough. The sunset was incredible, making it an unbelievable spot to take photos.
Sagrada Familia: This has to be at the top of the list of places to visit when in Barcelona. The Sagrada Familia is a stunning cathedral designed by the famous architect Antoni Gaudi. You can't put a frame around this Basilica. Stunning from the outside and even better on the inside. Pay the money and go inside, it’s like nothing you’ve ever seen. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most popular tourist attractions in Spain. Make sure your top covers the shoulders, and shorts and skirts go down to the knee.
La Rambla: Loved walking through La Rambla street, it's Barcelona’s most famous street. Despite its reputation as a tourist trap, I thought it was a cool spot. It's really hip with surrounding street art and offers heaps of nightlife options, shopping, and markets. It's also called Las Ramblas because the street has different sections with different names. Two of the best drink neighbourhoods near La Rambla are in Raval and El Gotico, so I would just walk into those areas. We caught the Barcelona metro a couple of times to get to the beach and La Rambla street, which was easy. Another place worth exploring is Ciutat Vella, which is a district of Barcelona, numbered District 1. The name means "old city" in Catalan. Here we spent the evening vintage shopping after dinner and had authentic churros for dessert down a secret alley street, it was divine.
La Boqueria Market: Also known as Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria, a famous food market located in the heart of Barcelona, Las Ramblas. Absolutely loved walking through all the markets. A place full of colours, vibrant atmosphere and authentic food. Definitely worth a visit for foodies and tourists. There are heaps of small stalls around this area selling cool souvenirs. There's a hidden tattoo joint just a short walk from here, and I ended up getting matching tattoos of the Flower Panot with all my friends. It's a symbol of Barcelona city.
Gothic Quarter: The Gothic Quarter is the oldest part of Barcelona with medieval streets filled with trendy bars, clubs and Catalan restaurants. One of my highlights was going out for drinks here with my friends before heading to the club with our light-up accessories we got from a vendor.
Clubbing: Barcelona nightlife is one of the best things about the city. While I was in Spain with my friends, our days basically involved siestas followed by fiestas. Given how lively and busy Barcelona is, it doesn’t take much to find a party in the city. The best clubs were La Terrrazza and Razzmatazz. La Terrrazza is an open-air summer club with house and electronic sounds. Finding the place was tricky, you walk towards a large castle building and then through an old town with a street of cool umbrellas. It was a really fun place, an icon in Barcelona. Razzmatazz is also an awesome club. It’s one of the largest nightclubs in Barcelona and has 5 separate rooms, so it's got something for everyone.
Casa Batllo: Sad I missed this incredible and whimsical building. It was designed by the famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí and built between 1904 and 1906. The building is famous for its unique and imaginative design, which incorporates elements of nature, such as waves and marine life. I really appreciate cool architecture, and Casa Batlló is truly a masterpiece.
I didn't get to explore outside Barcelona, but there are several worthwhile recommendations for places to visit in Spain:
-
Mallorca: If you prefer island life, head offshore to Mallorca, which is the largest of the Balearic Islands. I haven't been yet, but I learned about this beautiful place after my trip to Spain. It’s a dreamy island destination with beaches and coves, a mountain range, romantic fishing villages, and rustic countryside. Mallorca is quite large, so you'll need at least one week and a car if you want to explore around. Calo Des Moro is easily the most photographed beach with crystalline waters.
-
Checking out the Alhambra Palace in Granada, one of the most famous fortresses from the 14th century with incredible Moorish architecture.
-
Strolling through Madrid's Prado Museum, which has some of the world's best art by Spanish legends like Goya and Velázquez.
-
Kicking back on the beaches of Costa del Sol
-
Seeing a flamenco show in Seville, a passionate Spanish dance in a unique, and intimate room.
-
Hiking the Camino de Santiago, a famous spiritual route with amazing views and villages along the way. It's a strenuous journey and takes about a month. As the walk progresses, you get to see and experience beautiful villages and people. It’s not for inexperienced walkers.
